Background & Aims

Ultrasonography (US) is suitable for imaging superficial structures of the head and neck region. It is appropriate for larger scale studies, without using of ionizing radiation, low cost, high accuracy for soft tissues assessment, it is a simple technique with a rapid diagnosis, non-invasive. It allows screening of all soft tissues of face, as auxiliary to functional and aesthetic treatments for muscles of facial expression and temporomandibular joint and its associated structures. US is useful in helping local anatomy, particularly in finding arteries, veins, and nerve bundles, that is critical for minimizing complications from injections. Despite the increasing use of US in dentistry, few studies have evaluated the applicability of US in conditions of temporomandibular dysfunction and orofacial pain. The objective of this study was to carry out a literature review on the possibilities of using US in orofacial structures, especially in pathological conditions.

Methods

Bibliographic searches were carried out in the PubMed and SciELO databases using the terms “orofacial pain” or “temporomandibular dysfunction” and “ultrasound” in English, in October 2023. Inclusion criteria: complete works published in Portuguese, English or Spanish. Exclusion criteria: works that were not related to the researched topic. The research method was evaluated according to the PRISMA Statement.

Results

It was found 16 articles from PubMED and 1 from SciELO. US can detect disk displacement, joint effusion, muscle thickness, salivary diseases, evaluation of lymph nodes; it is operator-dependent method. Better standardization of the technique is required and normal parameters must be set.

Conclusions

US has acceptable accuracy for detecting TMJ disc displacements, sialodenitis, changes in muscle thickness in individuals with TMD, TMJ effusions, and mass lesions as potential causes of facial pain. However, there is a lack of standardized protocols for better applicability and reproducibility in the use of US.
