Background & Aims

Dispositional variables such as impulsiveness are related to opioid misuse in people with chronic noncancer pain (CNCP), pain interference is also related to misuse of prescribed medication. Also, Psychological flexibility and inflexibility constitute protective and risk factors of opioid misuse, respectively. Although the empirical literature indicates that these variables are related to opioid misuse, more studies are needed to examine their combined role. This study is aimed at preliminary analysing the relationship between these variables and prescription opioid misuse in a sample of people with CNCP as a part of a more extensive study registered at Open Science Framework.

Methods

The sample was comprised of 66 people with CNCP (29 men and 37 women). Correlations and stepwise regression were used to explore the role of the variables included in the hypothetical model.

Results

Moderate to strong correlations between most of the variables included and opioid misuse were found, except for pain intensity. Stepwise regression analyses showed that pain interference (? = .317, p < .001), psychological inflexibility (? = .256, p < .05) and impulsiveness (? = .284, p < .05) explained a 31.5% of the variance of opioid misuse.

Conclusions

Despite these are preliminary analyses, and the sample size was reduced, these results highlight the importance of considering dispositional, psychological and pain related measures prior to the prescription of opioid medication. Moreover, designing psychological interventions focused on impulsiveness and psychological inflexibility may be useful to reduce the risk of prescribed opioid medication misuse.
