Background & Aims

Third molar removal procedures will result in an inflammatory response (i.e., pain) that can potentially decrease the patient’s quality of life. Interestingly, vitamin D (25OHD) levels in the body is assumed to have a role in inflammatory conditions. The aim of this study was to analyze the efficacy of vitamin D in reducing pain and inflammatory symptoms on post third molar removal procedure patients

Methods

The study was conducted on 93 (40 male; 53 female) patients who underwent the third molar removal procedure at Unpad Dental Hospital, Bandung, Indonesia. Patients were randomly assigned to the control group (those who received standard post-third molar removal procedure therapy) or the intervention group (those who received standard therapy and vitamin D). Facial inflammatory responses, pain scores, and PGE2 salivary level were measured on baseline (right before operative procedure) and 24 hours post operative procedure. All data were gathered and analyzed with statistical analysis to compare between group differences.

Results

Analysis of between group differences showed significant differences in facial swelling (p = 0.008), mouth opening (p = 0.001), pain score (p = 0.001) and salivary PGE2 level (p = 0.001) at 24 hours post third molar removal procedure, between patients who received vitamin D as an adjuvant therapy compared to those who did not receive vitamin D.

Conclusions

Vitamin D has a significant effect in reducing pain and inflammatory symptoms on post third molar removal patients when used as an adjuvant therapy.
