Background & Aims

Among people with disability, those who have chronic LBP are more likely to report limitations and restrictions in relation to mobility, self-care, employment and social participation. The study investigated the effects of sodium diclofenac, ketoprofen and stabilization exercises on pain intensity, disability and quality of life of patients with low back pain

Methods

Sixty six patients with non specific low back pain were purposively recruited to participate in the study. They were randomly allocated to three groups equally, Stabilization Exercise (StExG), Sodium Diclofenac (SDG), and Ketoprofrn groups (KtG). Participants in all the three groups underwent stabilization exercises for 20 minute while SDG and KtG had additional sodium diclofenac and Ketoprofen phonophoresis for 15 minutes respectively. The treatment is for three times in a week for six weeks. Pain intensity, disability and health related quality of life were assessed using quadruped visual analogue scale, Rolland Morris Disability Index and SF 12 questionnaire for health related quality of life respectively. Assessment was done before the treatment, 3rd week and 6th week of the intervention. Data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Repeated measure ANOVA was used to compare the mean values within and among the groups. Alpha level was set at 0.05

Results

Results showed that there was a significant reduction in pain intensity, Disability, and HRQoL in all the three groups and p< 0.001. Comparing the 3 groups, StExG had the best and significant reduction in pain intensity, KtG had the best and significant reduction in HRQoL at p, 0.001.

Conclusions

It can be concluded from the study that stabilization exercises, sodium diclofenac and ketoprofen-phonophoresis were proved effective, while comparing the three intervention, stabilization exercises prove the best in the management of low back pain.
