Background & Aims

Osteoarthritis (OA) can lead to disabilities in affected individuals, being one of the most common causes of chronic musculoskeletal conditions and disability in people of developed countries. In individuals over 50 years, OA can affect 44% and 70%. Individuals affected by hip OA (HOA) may present clinical signs and symptoms such as pain, morning joint stiffness, bone crepitus, muscle atrophy, and limited hip movement. Studies involving only women with HOA are scarce in the literature. Therefore, the main objective of the present study was to evaluate the relationship between pain, physical function and stiffness in women with HOA.

Methods

Twenty-four women (56.96 years ±8.71) with a diagnosis of HOA were evaluated. The diagnosis of HOA was confirmed clinically and radiologically by a doctor, respecting the criteria of the American College of Rheumatology. Also, they were classified according to the Kellgren and Lawrence criteria (1957) in grades II and III. The study was carried out at the Federal University of Sao Carlos’ Physiotherapy Department and was approved by the UFSCar Human Research Ethics Committee (CAAE:08630819.5.0000.5504). Anthropometric data were collected, and the quality-of-life questionnaire Western Ontario and McMaster University Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) was applied.

Results

Statistical analysis was performed in SPSS, data normality was analyzed using the Shapiro-Wilk test (p < 0.05), and homogeneity was performed using the Levene test. To analyze data from the WOMAC domain scores, the Pearson Correlation test was applied. There was a moderate and positive significant correlation between the pain score and stiffness score (r = 0.421, p < 0.032), pain score and function score (r = 0.446, p < 0.022), and weak and positive significant correlation between function score and stiffness score (r = 0.359, p < 0.359).

Conclusions

We can conclude that pain can impacts the perception of quality of life of women with HOA in a moderate way in the perception of pain and stiffness, and difficulty in activities of daily living/hip joint functions of women with HOA, which may impairment the daily activities.
