Background & Aims
The factors contributing to the development of chronic pain are often highly complex. Initially, it may stem from a simple tissue or nerve injury, but as time progresses, physiological, psychological, or social elements may be introduced, leading to the intricate and challenging nature of pain that is not easily treatable. Effectively addressing chronic pain requires addressing the underlying causes, encompassing physiological care (for the body and diseases), psychological support (in terms of mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being), and social care (strengthening family and interpersonal support), which also involves aspects of health promotion and disease prevention. In Taiwan, the Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (TFDA) has made efforts to strengthen and promote the prevention and treatment of chronic pain. The purpose of this report is to explain and share with the international medical community the achievements of TFDA in this regard.
Methods
Over the past three years, TFDA has collaborated with scholars and experts in the medical field in Taiwan, aligning with TFDA’s policies. Extensive efforts have been made to collect the latest and widely applied principles and methods for the treatment of chronic pain internationally. This includes discussions on the causes, assessment, treatment, and prevention of chronic pain. In accordance with relevant regulations governing controlled substances in Taiwan, these insights have been compiled into manuals for reference by the medical community and the public in Taiwan.
Results
Over the past three years, TFDA has collaboratively compiled and officially released two manuals related to the care of chronic pain: 1.Handbook for the Care of Non-Cancer Chronic Pain and Reference for the Use of Narcotic Analgesics. 2.Handbook of Non-Cancer Chronic Pain care (Public Version).
These two manuals cover aspects of both the prevention and treatment of chronic pain. Notably, the second handbook is targeted at the general public and is available in both English and Chinese editions. The public version instructs individuals on self-care and provides guidance for caregivers on how to care for patients and themselves.
Conclusions
Over the past three years, TFDA has successfully compiled and officially released two manuals addressing the care of chronic pain, with a specific version designed for the general public, including an English edition. We would like to present these efforts to international colleagues interested in pain management. Further details will be provided in the conference.
