Background & Aims

The prevalence of chronic non-cancer pain (CNCP) in the adult Danish population has increased over the last two decades reaching 27.8% in 2017. Increasing demand for public multidisciplinary pain treatment, overloading of existing pain services and long waiting list to start multidisciplinary treatment are disturbing. Long waiting times for treatment can have deteriorating impact on people’s quality of life. Therefore, interventions for pain self-management in the pre-habilitation period are needed. This protocol describes a randomized controlled trial (RCT) with CNCP patients in the waiting list. The aims are to analyse the effects of two interventions for pain self-management on pain catastrophizing (primary outcomes), among other patient reported outcomes.

Methods

RCT, open label.
Sample: 150 Danish adult people with CNCP who have a waiting time of 3 months or more for multidisciplinary pain treatment.
The interventions are: 1) Empowered Relief Program – a single 2-hour online session of cognitive behavioural therapy and pain education (Darnall, B), 2) Video-based Pain Program – a series of short educational videos regarding chronic pain. A control group will be composed by people waiting for pain treatment at the Multidisciplinary Pain Centre. Assessments will take place before the interventions (baseline) and 2, 6 and 12 months after. All data will be collected through REDCap and statistical analysis will be performed.

Results

Collecting data started on May 2023. Data will be analysed in Aug 2024. As of February 2024 100 people with CNCP willing to participate in the study have been randomised and have completed the assigned intervention.
