Background & Aims

Producing Science requires following a process with scientific rigour, the same for the study and treatment of pain. Ethics, transparency, and reproducibility are essential, and peer review contributes to moving forward with knowledge. Motivated by Science, the scientific society IASP was created 50 years ago. Inspired by IASP, the Brazilian Chapter was also created (SBED 40 years). Since 2018, the BrJP has been the scientific journal of SBED (continuation of Revista DOR:1999-2017). The Brazilian Journal of Pain (BrJP) grows parallel with the open science movement, a global program with government, institutional, and private investments. Discuss the pain research scenario from the perspective of the available and open science paradigm and illustrate it with the trajectory of the BrJP.

Methods

This study is a case report on the update of BrJP to open Science and the perspective of this paradigm for advancing pain research and treatment. Open Science Variables, according to the SciELO recommendations: Open Access; Preprints; Open Peer Review Process; Open Data, no Fees charged; Ethics and Misconduct Policy, Errata and Retraction; Conflict of Interest Policy; Adoption of similarity checking software; Sex and gender issues; Ethics committee; Copyright; Intellectual property and terms of use; Digital preservation, Continued Publication. BrJP variables used for description (data from 2018 including all accepted papers until Jan. 2024): percentage of article types (Original, Review, Report Case), gender of authors, distribution of authors in regions of Brazil, articles with interstate and international collaborations, and percentage of global articles.

Results

The change in the bylaws of the SBED allowed (JBS) to carry out the transition process of the editor-in-chief of the BrJP and adapt the BrJP guidelines and policies to Open Science. BrJP accepts Preprints (recommendation of public platforms such as Preprints, SciELO Preprints, or EmeRI); to offer the possibility of an Open Peer Review Process; to stimulate the sharing of Open Data on the BrJP repository for depositing research data on SciELO, to start 2024 as Continued Publication. BrJP followed the other Open Science recommendations. Descriptive variables: 399 articles, 63% Originals, 62% women authors, mean of 4,3 (sd 0,4) authors/articles, partial homogeny between the most populous regions, with low representation from the north and central west regions, articles with an interstate(16%) and international (6%) collaboration were still a challenge. Only 7% were articles without Brazilian authors.

Conclusions

Open Science is a change encouraged by institutions such as UNESCO and governments of rich and emerging countries. Despite traditional resistance to changes, they occur. Supporting Open Science also means facilitating scientific dissemination by researchers from emerging countries. Regulating journals and being in a database such as DOAJ are strategies that minimize the strength of predatory journals and strengthen the quality of OA. Citizen science is another exciting change, motivating researchers to invite community members to collaborate with the research process. The challenges of BrJP in open Science are implementing data sharing in 2024, encouraging authors and reviewers to discuss the pros and cons of open peer review, and promoting articles in interstate and international partnerships for the growth and visibility of the journal and the researcher.
