Background & Aims

By incorporating satisfaction measures alongside pain-related variables, we can underscore comprehensive changes and improvements from the patient’s viewpoint. This study assessed patient satisfaction and their experiences with healthcare services, particularly focusing on pain treatment at the General Hospitals of Prizren and Gjilan.

Methods

This study was of a quantitative approach. A total of 595 patients were analyzed using a structured questionnaire related to demographics, overall satisfaction, and experiences, as well as acute and chronic pain. The data were analyzed using the SPSS 26 software program.

Results

In this study, participants were predominantly female (Prizren 71%, Gjilan 65%). Participants from rural areas slightly outnumbered those from urban areas (Prizren 57%, Gjilan 58%). Approximately 80% of the respondents stated that the staff was sensitive, while around 20% reported insufficient sensitivity of the staff towards their pain. Dissatisfaction was also noted in the process of pain management, especially in obtaining or purchasing medications, where 41% privately bought some of the medicines, and 32% bought all the medications. The data indicate that around 40% of the respondents faced financial difficulties in accessing necessary services, with about 7% stating they could not afford it, while 53% could financially afford healthcare. Approximately 17% of hospitalized patients expressed concerns about the professionalism of the healthcare staff.

Conclusions

Patient satisfaction is closely linked to the implementation of a self-management approach to pain. During the data analysis, it was observed that patients with severe pain tended to express higher dissatisfaction compared to those with lower pain levels. Additionally, factors contributing to increased dissatisfaction included the level of empathy expressed by healthcare professionals and the information received regarding pain management, including brochures and informational materials.
