Background & Aims

Background: Although widely prevalent, low back pain in chronic neurological conditions such as ataxia is poorly understood and addressed in clinical scenario.
Aim and objective: We aim to investigate the prevalence of low back pain in ataxia patients, its characteristics, its association with the underlying disease severity and its impact on daily activities in a cohort of patients suffering from ataxia.

Methods

Methods: Fifty patients with ataxia of minimum one year duration are screened for prevalence of ongoing low back pain for more than 3 months using a semi-structured questionnaire in the outpatient department of a tertiary healthcare centre. The questionnaire consists of socio-demographic factors (age, gender), disease associated factors (duration, Scale for Assessment and Rating of ataxia. Berg Balance Scale), severity of low back pain and associated disability (Visual analogue scale, Oswestry Disability Index) and other associated factors (presence of comorbidities such as lumbar disc herniation and lumbar canal stenosis, functional ambulation category, use of assistive products). Linear regression analysis is used to recognise predictive factors for low back pain.

Results

Results: It is an ongoing study. So we present here only preliminary data. Complete results will be available after statistical analysis.

Conclusions

Conclusion: Low back pain is a common presenting complaint in this population and its management needs to be integrated in the rehabilitation regimens to improve quality of life.
