Background & Aims

Introduction: Chronic postoperative pain has been defined as pain arising after a surgery of at least 3 months. It is considered as a pcublic health problem due the increasing number of surgical procedures. Thus, the objective of this study is to determine the incidence of chronic post-surgical pain in general surgery and the interactions between the surgical procedure during period of one yea

Methods

A prospective, descriptive and monocentric study was carried out on patients who have undergone a surgery over a period of one year , from January to December 2019 .The patients pain is determined according to the visual analogue scale two hours , 24 hours , 48 hours after this surgery (according to the EVA scale and DN4).

Results

109 patients out of 664 operated presented chronic post-surgical pain at three months, with an incidence rate of 20,07% , the pain is severe in 5,15% of all operated patients. The neuropathic Caracter is found in 64,22% of chronic pain patients, a half of patients with chronic post-surgical pain are mastectomies, digestive cancers and inguinal hernias. The risk factors identified by this study are the age of the patients, the type and duration of the surgical intervention, the intensity of the acute postoperative pain.

Conclusions

The incidence of chronic post-surgical pain is acceptable, the specific incidence of chronic post mastectomy pain, digestive cancer surgery, inguinal hernia is higher than those of the literature. A good knowledge of the risk factors and appropriate prevention can decrease the incidence and the consequences of chronic postoperative pain.
